The Department of the Dordogne, traditionally known as the Perigord, is one of the most beautiful areas of France. Despite its recognition as a region worthy of exploration it remains largely unspoiled by the influence of tourism. Peace and tranquillity have been preserved. The Dordogne is one of the few regions of Europe where man and nature still co-exist in harmony. Throughout the region the landscape is varied; limestone hills, richly wooded with chestnuts, walnuts and evergreen oaks, are traversed by fertile valleys divided into a patchwork of fields in which can be seen growing maize, tobacco, and the ubiquitous grape vines, as well as pastures supporting the distinctive red Limousin cattle.
