PLACES OF INTEREST Perigord is also famed for its dramatic features; the Dordogne river itself, and the many caves and chasms of which the Gouffre de Padirac is perhaps the most celebrated. There are fantastic relics of prehistoric man to be found in the "Val de l'homme", the Vezerre valley, around Les Eyzies, Sarlat and Montignac. The renowned caves of Lascaux are nearby. The area's importance in medieval times is much in evidence, with numerous hilltop castles and fortified villages to mark three centuries of conflict between English and French; Beynac and Jumilhac la Grand are fine examples well worth a visit.
